Guided Reading and Writing
Today, we talked about how to read a book. We talked about how the “title” is the name of the book. We also talked about how we use our finger to point at the words as we read them. I asked the students, “Do we read right to left?” They said, “NO!” I asked them, “Do we read left to right?” They said, “YES!” Then, the students got their own book and the whole class practiced reading simple sentences in their books. In Kindergarten, learning print concepts, such as how to read a book, is important to helping students become good readers.

Today’s special activity was making the traditional Chuseok toy, Gea Gi. Students watched the teacher make a Gea Gi with cellophane paper and a stone, and then they made their own Gea Gi. Finally, we practiced kicking the Gea Gi around the classroom! It was a lot of fun!

For Phonics awareness today, we practiced making the letter “A” sound with our mouths by singing the “I’ve Got the Whole Alphabet In My Mouth” song and reading an “My Letter A Book” with words that begin with the letter “A.” At this age, most students know the alphabet but they need lots of practice pronouncing English sounds correctly. That’s why phonics is so important! We had fun reading the book and singing the song.
